Eagle River Wisconsin Chain of Lakes The "Chain" is the world's largest chain of inland freshwater lakes - 28 in all, which occupy 3,928 acres of surface water and 68 miles of shoreline. Water elevated twelve feet by the Otter Rapids Dam has served to deepen and connect the lakes of the Eagle River Chain. Because the "Chain" is freely navigable, it is heavily used by the public for fishing, swimming, boating, water-skiing, and in winter, ice fishing.
The "Chain" contains a great range of fishing opportunities. Principle species include muskie, walleye, norther pike, largemouth, and smallmouth bass, as well as a variety of pan fish. "Chain" lakes are especially well known for their musky and walleye, and are stocked by the DNR regularly.
Nicolet National Forest The Nicolet National Forest, which lies adjacent to Eagle River, is 657,520 acres in size. It contains more than 1,200 lakes and is noted for its hunting, fishing, canoeing, hiking, snowmobiling, and bird watching facilities.
